We recently discovered a fantastic nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing delicious treats and warm smiles to our troops stationed overseas.
After speaking to a young man before his deployment to Iraq, Marlene Summers felt the urge to find a special way to offer support to the troops while they are so far from home. She wanted to help boost morale and “… let those who serve this great nation know we honor their commitment and remain appreciative for their unselfish sacrifice.”
Because she already owned cookie company, Marlene decided to send gigantic chocolate chip cookies to the troops. The cookies are like a *hug* from your grandma–a little sweetness of home. Since 2005, the project has sent over 100,000 cookies to the men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those who are part of Grammy’s Cookie Convoy are well on their way to their goal of sending 1 million cookies.
Also know as The Troops Project, this heartfelt process is made possible by donations and volunteers. It takes about $10,000 to execute each shipment of 5,000 cookies but seems worth every penny when you see all of the wonderful testimonials from the troops. If you’re interested in helping but are not able to donate funds, they are always looking for handwritten cards and letters to send as well. The Troops Project is recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit project.
